  • Wildfire Smoke Becomes Leading Source of Unhealthy Air Exposure During Pregnancy

Wildfires are now the leading source of unhealthy air pollution exposure for pregnant women in the U.S., according to a new study by Faculty Associate Michel Boudreaux, of more than 64 million pregnancies. By 2019, wildfire smoke accounted for about 65% of high-pollution days during pregnancy. Boudreaux emphasized that while individuals can reduce exposure through air filtration and masking, communities and governments must also ensure access to clean-air shelters, filtration, and quality medical care. “Governments and communities need to play an active role” in protecting those exposed to wildfire smoke, noted Boudreaux.
