Faculty Associate Jing Liu on advancing AI policy and practice in Maryland schools

Schools in Maryland are developing artificial intelligence (AI) policies for their classrooms following new guidance from the Maryland State Department of Education. The guidance provides guardrails around issues including data privacy, technology bias and keeping classroom instruction human-centered, while giving districts flexibility to determine how AI should be used.

Faculty Associate Jing Liu noted that the guidance is a good starting point, but will need to evolve with technology. "AI is very different compared to prior technology breakthroughs [because] they are evolving so fast," said Liu. "[The guidelines] cannot be a static thing. It [has] to be very adaptive."
