Fall 2026 Time Use Webinar with R. Gordon Rinderknecht

Presentation Title: Using the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) to study Americans’ social lives: opportunities and limitations

About the Presentation

The ATUS, being the primary source of information on how Americans allocate their time, is a crucial source of data for studying the health of Americans’ social lives. In this webinar, I discuss the ATUS’s time diary methodology, review the various ways the ATUS has been used to study Americans’ sociality, and highlight what this research tells us. I then demonstrate how researchers can get started using the ATUS via IPUMS’s extract builder (www.atusdata.org/atus/) while highlighting the ATUS’s limitations for studying time spent with others and time spent alone.
