Presentation Title: Using the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) to study Americans’ social lives: opportunities and limitations

About the Presentation

The ATUS, being the primary source of information on how Americans allocate their time, is a crucial source of data for studying the health of Americans’ social lives. In this workshop, we discuss the ATUS’s time diary methodology, review the various ways the ATUS has been used to study Americans’ sociality, and highlight what this research tells us. We then demonstrate how researchers can get started using the ATUS via IPUMS’s extract builder (www.atusdata.org/atus/) while highlighting the ATUS’s limitations for studying time spent with others and time spent alone.

About the Speaker

Gordon Rinderknect is the Resident Fellow of the German Marshall Fund and Affiliate Researcher of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research.
